Microbial communities are complex and important for health, agriculture, and food systems, but they present unique challenges compared to studying single populations. In my work, I aim to understand these communities using a combination of computational approaches. Using large metagenomic datasets, we uncovered signatures of the taxonomic composition of the gut microbiome. Beyond simply listing which microbes are present, we also develop models to explore how they function and interact. For small consortia, we design numerical models and predict dynamics; for larger communities, we use simpler models to study metabolic complementarity. We seek to relate microbiome composition and function in order to make predictions about the underlying mechanisms of these complex systems.
