Comment certaines espèces commensales intestinales résistent aux attaques colonisatrices de l’agent pathogène responsable du choléra, Vibrio cholerae ?
C’est à cette question fondamentale que le laboratoire du Dr. Melanie Blokesch basé à l’Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) s’est intéressé dans leur dernière étude parue dans la prestigieuse revue Nature Communications.
Dans cet article co-mené par un tandem de chercheurs postdoctoraux Franco-Belge, les Dr. Nicolas Flaugnatti et Dr. Sandrine Isaac, les auteurs ont pu démontrer que certains isolats commensaux intestinaux résistent naturellement aux assauts de V. cholerae par l’intermédiaire de deux mécanismes moléculaires distincts.
Un premier qui requiert la production d’une machinerie de sécrétion de Type VI et qui permet alors de tuer de manière contact-dépendent les bactéries colonisatrices pathogènes. Enfin, un second qui met en jeu la production de complexes polysaccharidiques associés à l’enveloppe bactérienne, conférant ainsi une réelle protection physique et rendant inefficace les attaques du pathogène V. cholerae.
