En 2020, un nouveau collectif a été créé par des scientifiques engagés dans la lutte contre le dérèglement climatique. Ce mouvement est né suite à la publication d’une tribune soutenue par 1000 scientifiques dansLe Monde,qui fait écho à d’autres publications similaires dans des journaux européens, et s’inscrit dans le groupe international de Scientist Rebellion. Le mouvement “Scientifiques en rébellion” regroupe des chercheurs d’une grande diversité de disciplines. Ils s’insurgent principalement contre l’inaction des institutions face au défi de limiter le réchauffement et rester en dessous de 2°C d’augmentation de la température et alertent sur les effets catastrophiques que cette inactivité a sur la biodiversité.
Bien que leurs actions s’inscrivent souvent dans la désobéissance civile, et sont souvent contestées et jugées par d’autres comme desservant la cause, elles témoignent d’un mal être et de la colère d’une partie de la communauté scientifique. En effet, ils sont connus pour mettre en œuvre des actions choc, pour se faire entendre et sensibiliser la population. Ils comptent déjà de nombreuses interventions comme l’interruption de forums énergétiques ou des actions contre des entreprises de l’automobile ou pétrolières.
Plus dans le domaine de la recherche, ils prônent une nouvelle façon de faire, plus attentive à l’empreinte carbone des expériences qu’on peut mener au laboratoire, et au développement des nouvelles thématiques/ projets pour répondre directement à l’urgence climatique. Le mouvement publie aussi régulièrement des éditoriaux dans des journaux scientifiques comme The Lancet Planetary Health (https://doi.org/10.1016/S2542-5196(22)00287-X).
